English Certificates

What is an English Certificate?

Before the English certification system was introduced, whenever Koreans needed to certify their family relations in a foreign country, they had to obtain a certificate of registered matters of family relations issued in Korean, inconveniently have the certificate translated into English, and notarized at their own expense.
To eliminate such inconvenience, the Supreme Court and Ministry of Foreign Affairs introduced the English certification system for family relations by linking information on passports to the system. They began the certification service on December 27, 2019.
Now, a person who needs a certificate of family relation for studying abroad, employment, international marriage, etc., can have a certificate of registered matters issued in English.
The subject’s name on an English certificate is output according to the information in his or her passport. If no passport has been issued to any parent or spouse of the subject, the name converted into Roman characters according to the “Romanization of Korean Language” published by Ministry of the Culture, Sports and Tourism is output for such parent or spouse
