Family Relation Register and Certification

A family relation register comprises data stored in a computer system that classifies and compiles information and data of each person regarding the registration of family relations. Therefore, it is maintained not in the form of a written document but in the form of computerized data. The information maintained is published in the form of a certificate showing the relevant details of the family relation of the person concerned, which is extracted from the computerized system. According to the purpose of issuance, the certificates of the family relation register can be classified into the following five categories.

    1. Family relation certificate

    2. Identification certificate

    3. Marriage relation certificate

    4. Adoption relation certificate

    5. Full adoption relation certificate

Unlike the previous family register in which all matters regarding a family’s status can be found from a single transcript, the current certificate of registered matters discloses only necessary information as data are segmented according to the purpose of issuance and protects personal data from being unnecessarily disclosed to the greatest extent.

Meanwhile, the former Family Register(Jejeok Deung-Bon) is still available as an archived family relation register which was organized under the name of the “Head of Family ''. This document contains information on all members of a family concerning birth, marriage, divorce, adoption, death, and other family history reported before Jan. 1. 2008. when the Act on the Registration of Family Relations was enacted.
