Place of Registration

Meaning

The place of registration under the “Act on Registration of Family Relations” is a functional concept introduced for such purposes as the criteria for making decisions on competent courts concerned with registrations of family relations, the function of search of family relations registers, and the connection with the previous family register. A family member’s place of registration does not need to be the same as that of another family member and may be changed freely. The place of registration has a concept different from that of the domicile, which refers to the place of one’s residence.

Search Function of the Place of Registration

The ‘resident registration number’ or the ‘place of registration’ is an essential input when searching for the family relation register of the subject person in the family relation registration system.

Many overseas Korean nationals have no ‘resident registration number’. In this case, they must provide information on the ‘place of registration’ in order to file reports related to family relations such as marriage, birth, death, etc., or to obtain a certificate related to family relation registration. Therefore, it is absolutely important for them to remember the ‘place of registration’ if they do not have the ‘resident registration number’. It is recommended that you set a place of registration to an address that is easy to remember. For reference, it is possible to set the same place as the parents’.

A child of an overseas Korean national is not given a resident registration number just by filing a report of birth, so you should take note and remember your child’s place of registration.
