Report of Death

Reporting Person / Period / Place

  1. Reporting person
    1. Persons obliged to report

      Relatives cohabiting with the deceased are obliged to report the death.

    2. Persons qualified for reporting

      Relatives, cohabitants (such as the spouse in a de facto marital relationship with the same domicile), or persons responsible for managing the place of death are qualified for reporting.

    3. Reporting by any person other than persons obliged or qualified to report

      Only persons who are obliged or qualified to report may report the death of any person.

  2. Reporting period

    A death report shall be accompanied by a medical certificate of death or a report of autopsy within one month of the date when the reporting person becomes aware of the death. The report may be filed even after the reporting period. However, an administrative fine will be imposed if the person obliged to report fails to file the report within the period without good cause.

  3. Reporting place

    The report may be filed with the overseas Korean diplomatic mission with jurisdiction over the area where the reporting person resides or the Family Register Office for Overseas Koreans. The reporting person who has returned to the Republic of Korea may file the report to the registrar with jurisdiction over his or her domicile or current address.
    In the case of a Si (Gu), the report may be filed with the office of the Dong with jurisdiction over the deceased’s place of resident registration.
